Yesterday, the Serbian Orthodox Church (SPC) recognized the Macedonian Orthodox Church (MPC) as independent. The news was announced by the Serbian Patriarch Porfirije in Skopje, who emphasized that the decision was reached unanimously at the recent Synod of the Serbian Orthodox Church to make the North Macedonia church a canonical church.

The recognition the Autocephaly of the Macedonian Orthodox Church put a canonical end to the half-century schism of the former wing of the SPC which called itself the Macedonian Orthodox Church, and which the SPC has not recognized to this day.

As the Patriarch explained, what remains is for the Synods of the Serbian and Macedonian Orthodox Churches to work out the technicalities and organizational details together and in collaboration, which will then be followed by a celebration of the official proclamation act.
