The President of Serbia Aleksandar Vučić stated that it became apparent in Brussels that, where the geopolitical interests of the European Union are concerned, candidacy status may be given even when nothing has been done by way of preparation for membership.

Asked at the opening ceremony of the Rosulje airport whether he agreed with the Minister Jadranka Joksimović that Serbia may become a member of the European Union in the next five to seven years, Aleksandar Vučić said that he was a realist, but that the Minister was very knowledgeable about the relations within the Union.

“That depends on the political and geopolitical situation. We have now seen that you can get candidacy status even if you have done nothing by way of preparation, if it is in the European Union’s geopolitical interest, while those who have done a lot more, such as North Macedonia, Albania and Bosnia and Herzegovina, get nothing,” explained Vučić.

He added that he was not quite as optimistic as the Minister, and that he puts most faith in our own strengths.

“We must continue on our European path. We must put most of our faith in our own strengths. We have shown that we can change this country beyond recognition with our own work, staying and surviving on the European path and preserving traditional friendships,” said Vučić.

As an example, he pointed out the Rosulje airport, which strengthens the infrastructure and which, as well as the highways, completely changes the image of Serbia.
