The situation in Kosovo and Metohija is at the precipice of an ethnically motivated conflict, and the attempts of the European Union to mediate attempts to establish dialogue between Belgrade and Priština have shown the impotence of Brussels, said the Spokesperson for the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Maria Zakharova.

“We are carefully following the dramatic developments in the events in Kosovo. The situation over there escalated once again during the last month and got to the precipice of an inter-ethnic conflict,” said Zakharova.

According to her, the failure of the European Union’s mediation attempts has shown the impotence of the bloc, after the General Assembly of the United Nations ordered the Union in 2010 to establish a dialogue between Belgrade and Priština.

“The comments of the Serbian authorities relating to the agreement confirm that Belgrade has no illusions about what was achieved,” stressed Zakharova.

She added that the protection of Serbs in Kosovo and Metohija, including the issue of movement, is of the utmost importance for Belgrade.
