Committee for Kosovo and Metohija Called on International Institutions to Secure Peaceful Living Environment for Serbian People
The Committee for Kosovo and Metohija in the National Assembly of Serbia has announced that the security situation in Kosovo and Metohija was extremely tense and unstable, particularly in the context of the positions of the Serbian and other non-Albanian people.
“This condition is a consequence of the breakdown of dialogue, not complying with the agreements that have been already reached, unilateral moves and the systemic institutional, physical and psychological violence on a daily basis over the Serbian people in Kosovo and Metohija by the provisional institutions of self-government in Priština,” said the Committee’s announcement.
It is being demanded that the provisional institutions of self-government in Priština immediately discontinue terrorizing the Serbian people and that instead of threats, physical violence, the use of firearms and putting pressure on the Serbian people, they sincerely devote themselves to resolving all issues in a peaceful manner, through dialogue, by reaching mutually acceptable solutions.
The members of the Assembly Committee have provided support to the Serbian people in Kosovo and Metohija in the defense of their human rights and freedoms, safe living conditions and survival.
They stated that it was their belief that the Serbian people in Kosovo and Metohija and their elected political representatives would continue to fight for their rights, safe living conditions, equal position, and survival through peaceful, democratic means, as they have up to this moment.
“The Committee rejects any and all attempts to present the Serbian people in Kosovo and Metohija, particularly in the North, as a destabilizing factor, and to criminalize its elected political representatives, in order to manufacture a justification for the use of force by the armed formations of the provisional institutions of self-government in Priština against the Serbian community in that manner. The Committee calls on the international community, in particular the countries which have an undeniable influence on the provisional institutions of self-government in Priština, to eagerly and urgently stop Priština in their continued acts of violence against the Serbian people, to realize the provisions of the agreements signed in the scope of dialogue without further delay, to establish the Union of Serbian Municipalities and to renounce the unilateral decision on the re-registration of vehicles. The international community, in particular the United Nations and the European Union, have an obligation to secure the full implementation of the signed agreements,” said the announcement.
Per the United Nations Resolution No. 1244, the Committee also called on the UNMIK, the KFOR and the EULEX to fulfill their mandates without bias and discrimination and to secure a peaceful living environment for the Serbian people, whose survival in Kosovo and Metohija is threatened.
It is also necessary to stop the representatives of the provisional institutions in Priština to use force against the Serbian civilian population and deny their basic human rights and freedoms.
These conclusions were adopted at a session of the Assembly Committee for Kosovo and Metohija held yesterday.
The members of the committee considered information on the security situation in Kosovo and Metohija from an aspect of threatening the security of the Serbian people, which was delivered by the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Ministry of Defense, the Security and Information Agency, the Office for Kosovo and Metohija and the The Office for Coordination Affairs in the Negotiation Process with the Provisional Institutions of Self-Government in Priština, which was elaborated by the acting director of the Office for Kosovo and Metohija Petar Petković.
